Heart disease, lung cancer, and emphysema are just three of the many possible diseases that smokers become more prone to due to the habit. Most do not smoke out of a desire to get diseases. People smoke because it is relaxing, it is social, and it is also, to a smoker, enjoyable. </p>
<p>&#13;Quitting smoking is, according to many, as difficult as quitting more serious illegal drugs. The nicotine is in the blood. Withdrawal can bring on the shakes, headaches, nervousness, and insomnia. Cravings are strong and come long after the initial quitting period. To have the strength to resist these feelings is the difficult part.</p>
<p><span id="more-1543"></span></p>
<p>&#13;Smoking cessation is a billion dollar industry. The products to choose from are vast. Nicotine gum, hypnotherapy tapes, stop smoking groups, and an assortment of books at any bookstore provide many ways to reduce the cravings and ease the withdrawal. Most of these products cost money and it can be hard to make your way through the jungle of stop smoking products. </p>
<p>&#13;In 1992 the most comprehensive study of smokers trying to quit was carried out at the University of Iowa. Two researchers compounded the information from many different studies using the data collected from over 72,000 smokers. These smokers lived throughout North America, Scandinavia and Europe. The results were published in New Scientist magazine. </p>
<p>&#13;On average, the different quit smoking methods had an average of a 25% success rate. Joint techniques, combining exercise and breathing techniques, acupuncture, and stop smoking groups where participants smoke stale cigarettes in confined spaces did not rise above 30% success rate.</p>
<p>&#13;The research project examined the data from forty-eight different hypnosis based studies on quitting smoking. Over six thousand smokers participated in these studies. Hypnosis, compared to the other quit smoking techniques, was off the charts. An average of 80% success rate was seen in the different studies. In contrast nicotine gum provided a 10% success rate. The self-help books achieved 9% change. </p>
<p>&#13;Hypnosis is clearly the strongest method for quitting smoking successfully. As smoking cessation can be an expensive endeavour, early investment in a hypnosis programme can be money saving. Research shows that often many sessions are not necessary. The average smoker needs between one to four sessions. A trained and licensed professional is also a key to success.</p>

<p>For every known type of operation&#8211;even open heart surgery, hypnosis has been successfully used at least once in lieu of anesthesia. Hypnosis is used to control bleeding and facilitate speed of recovery.</p>

<p>&#13;People smoke for various reasons at different situations. Reasons for smoking ranges from psychological issues, habits, social status symbol and physical dependence on nicotine.</p>

<p>&#13;Smoking has no health benefits. Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,800 chemicals, 69 are contributors to cancer. 90 percent of lung cancer is known to have 80-90 percent chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Psychologically, the smoker is confronted with a habit which means, a major change in behavior. Both factors must be considered in order for the process of quitting to succeed.</p>
<p>&#13;Health concerns are the top most reasons for people to give up smoking. Ex-smokers enjoy a higher life quality with less ailments.</p>
<p>&#13;The health benefits of quitting exceeds risks from less than 10 pounds weight increase or any psychological effects that may be the result of quitting.</p>
<p>&#13;Smoke quitting effectively reduces cost of vices. A significant difference is observed quickly when one quits. The ex-smoker can taste and smell much better and breath also smells better. Risk of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases is reduced. Quitting prevents damaging effects of tobacco on ones appearance, which includes premature skin wrinkling, strained teeth and yellowish fingernails, diseases of the gums and bad hair and clothes smell.</p>

<p>People have many different ideas about what hypnosis looks like. Some think of a hapless hypnotized volunteer at a Las Vegas show clucking like a chicken. Others think of crime witnesses being hypnotized by police psychologists. Still others think of horror movies where a hypnotized person became little but a mindless zombie, obeying the commands of his hypnotist no matter how dreadful.</p>

What is Hypnosis?</p>

The truth is far less glamorous. Hypnosis is merely a fancy word for a light trance, a state somewhere between waking and sleeping. There are many hypnosis techniques available to help induce this trance. While in this trance, hypnotized subjects tend to be highly attuned to some stimuli (e.g., the hypnotist&#8217;s voice) while ignoring other stimuli altogether (e.g., not realizing whether the room is hot or cold). People in hypnotic trances are also more suggestible and may have decreased inhibitions. A hypnotic trance, however, is easily broken, and at no time is a hypnotized person ever completely out of control of his or her behavior. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
How is a Person Hypnotized?</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
There are many hypnosis techniques to induce a hypnotic trance. Some hypnosis techniques involve using props like a constantly moving spiral or a glittery gold watch. The most simple hypnosis technique, however, is called progressive relaxation and requires nothing more than the hypnotist&#8217;s voice.</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
To use this hypnosis technique, the subject should sit or lie down in a posture he or she finds comfortable. Soft music may be played in the background if this is agreeable to both hypnotist and subject. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
In a soft but firm voice, the hypnotist should then draw the subject&#8217;s attention to the major muscle groups, starting with the feet. The subject should be asked to tense the muscles in his or her feet, hold them for a count of three, and then relax them. The hypnotist should then move up the subject&#8217;s body, focusing on calves and knees, thighs, buttocks, etc. After every few muscle groups, the hypnotist should remind the subject to maintain the relaxed state (e.g., &#8220;You are now completely relaxed from your stomach to your toes&#8221;)</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
As the hypnotist reaches the subject&#8217;s neck and face, additional suggestions of sleepiness can be given (e.g., &#8220;You&#8217;re so relaxed that your eyelids are heavy. Let your eyes close as you lie there and listen to my voice.&#8221;)</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
What Next?</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Once this hypnosis technique has been used to induce trance, the hypnotist can ask questions, suggest visualizations (e.g., having the subject visualize him or herself turning off the &#8220;pain&#8221; switch in the brain), or implant post-hypnotic commands (e.g., &#8220;When you wake up, you won&#8217;t feel like smoking&#8221;).</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
Some people slip naturally from trance to a sleep state from which they awaken calm and refreshed. </p>
<p>&#13;<br />
The best hypnosis technique, however, is to awaken the subject. One common way to do this is by counting from ten to one, giving the subject cues on how his or her body is waking up. (For instance, &#8220;Ten. You are starting to wake up. Nine. Your feet are light and ready to dance or walk. Eight. Your legs are ready to carry you wherever you want to go. Etc.)</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
After a hypnotic session, be open to feedback from your subject. No matter how skilled a hypnotist you may be, there is always room to improve!</p>

<p><strong>What Are The New Behaviors For Weight Loss?</strong></p>
<p>In an earlier article I discussed how hypnosis can be used to make lifestyle changes that will become habits. These new habits will lead to an overweight person becoming a lean, physically and emotionally healthier person. Now I received a bunch of questions about what are the habits that I work on to help an overweight person create change and lose weight? And since there were so many questions about what these habits are I decided to write a series of articles explaining the basic habit changes necessary or most desirable that will lead to the quickest change in your weight status.</p>
<p><strong>What&#8217;s The Number 1 Habit Of A Healthy And Fit Person?</strong></p>

<p><strong>Eat Regularly- Especially Breakfast!</strong></p>
<p>You probably heard that one before. In fact it&#8217;s probably even now bouncing around inside your head and it&#8217;s probably still anchored to the voice of your mother telling you to eat breakfast, or asking you as you were running out the door for school, whether you had your breakfast. You probably heard them say that students who ate a good morning meal were more attentive in class and better learners. Well, take a moment to thank mom, for trying to set you straight. It seems to hold true that if you eat a &#8220;good&#8221; breakfast you will be healthier, more alert and function better during the day. Here&#8217;s some of the theory behind having a good breakfast. You see that word breakfast? It literally means breaking your fast. That&#8217;s the fast you did all night while you were sleeping. It&#8217;s like a mini hibernation. While you were sleeping, your body was busy using all the fuel (food, nutrients, etc.) you consumed during the day to rebuild and resupply the parts of your body that were in need. Anything left over was either put into the trash system and shipped out of your body, or stored for some other time. The amount set aside for storage depends upon what your body figures will be available or unavailable in the near future. So your body has some kind of mechanism that monitors the availability of fuel and changes your storage needs based upon that information. </p>
<p>Where does that information come from? Your very own behavior. If you don&#8217;t eat regularly, your own body interprets that as a sign of food shortage. And if there is a food shortage, there is a real threat we could starve. That is how our bodies operate. Our bodies don&#8217;t really care much as to whether we can fit into that designer dress or suit we just bought and had custom fitted. Your body is more interested in whether you will be around tomorrow to procreate and keep the species going. That is the big picture. Everything else (designer clothes, self-esteem, respect from others, etc.)is secondary. So what do you think happens if we starve ourselves to lose weight? Our bodies go into a food storage orgy. You start to get really stingy about using up our food stores. You hold onto and build up your fat reserves. That is one of the reasons why restrictive diets don&#8217;t work. So you must eat in order to lose weight. In fact you must make sure that you maintain at least a minimum amount of calories coming in everyday so that you don&#8217;t trigger that starvation-hoard program that&#8217;s built in for our survival.</p>
<p><strong>Getting Back To Breakfast.</strong></p>
<p><strong></strong></p>
<p>Breakfast is literally breaking the fast that we just experienced all night long. We haven&#8217;t eaten now for the longest stretch of time during our 24 hour day. When we awaken in the morning the quickest way to let your survival monitor know that everything is OK, and we are not starving is to eat something. Start supplying food to your body as early as you can after you get up and your body&#8217;s metabolism will kick in and start burning up the fat resources it&#8217;s been hoarding as well as the new food you&#8217;re taking in. It returns your metabolism to it&#8217;s normal waking rate after it&#8217;s been slowed down for your sleep period. This will assure that you will be burning off the foods you take in as well as the old foods you stored as fat.</p>
